10 - The Conclusion

The Verdict

We can conclude nothing else other then the fact that the Hiper Type R Mk-II 680W power supply is a pretty fine power supply. Not only delivers it as promised stable environment, it's also aesthetically pleasing and with the USB hub integrated, pretty handy as well.

We experiences no stability issues whatsoever, and this is based on a Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor overclocked from 2400 MHz towards 3600 MHz. Next to that we used a power hungry mainboard (eVGA 750i SLI FTW) and inserted a dual GPU core based GeForce 9800 GX2. With all that enthusiast stuff going on, we still ended up at a maximum wattage peak of 415 Watt (which is not bad for the mayhem we created there), which tells us that the advertised 85% efficiency, might be a very true thing. So yeah, the Type R Mk-II 680W power supply is looking good in many ways. We think that the Hiper PSU can handle just about any CPU/GPU configuration currently available on the market.

Two slight exceptions, for a four 12V rail based PSU with this much wattage available I would have liked to see another PCIe connector leading straight from the PSU. Even the 9800 GTX as recently released already needs two connectors per card. Setting up two of these in SLI would not be an issue .. yet with only two PEG connectors available (PCI Express Graphics) .. you'll have to revert back to the t-splitter converted cable/adapter that comes with your graphics card, and let's be honest here .. those things look just dreadful.

My second dislike is the fact that the PSU still draws 45 Watt with the PC powered down, which in my eyes is just not acceptable in the year 2008 where being green is a hot topic. Switch the PSU off if you do not use it please. Other PSU's might show this behaviour as well. But for Guru3D this is a new policy, as we will now monitor the 'forgotten' stuff like that.

guru3d-recommended_150px.jpgCable management, the Hiper PSU doesn't have any. But hey .. some oppose it, other like it.. again choices. None-the-less, this to date was one of the better PSUs we have tested. We could not stress it with the system we threw at it, yet what we did test showed an absolutely stable platform. Next to that we see good PSU protection & shutdown features, we think it's quite an efficient product as well (hard to measure really). For the audiophiles .. this PSU just doesn't make any noticeable noise. The meshed design and low rotation yet big fan make it just so silent. Also notice the sleeved black nylon wiring, it's really lengthy enough to use it even in the largest chassis.

So yeah that's basically it .. if you need a very decent PSU, good looks and even some extra (referring to the USB 2.0 ports) then look no further, at roughly 125 EUR / 135 USD your can purchase this perfectly good PSU, from packaging to design to power distribution. Without a doubt recommended.
